FAIR TAXES: THERE'S A BETTER WAY

The Problem - The Solution

Massive Tax Cuts

Tax Cuts for the Rich

The last three decades have seen huge tax cuts in New York, the great majority of which went to corporations and the very wealthy. The top tax rate for the very wealthiest New Yorkers is less than half of what it was thirty years ago.

The result? Higher property taxes for middle-class New Yorkers. Someone has to pick up the slack.

A Regressive Tax System

Those cuts mean that taken together with regressive sales and property taxes, New York’s tax system puts the greatest burden on those least able to afford it.

Money Lost

Billions Missing

The costs are adding up. This year, tax cuts will leave us with over $16 billion less to invest in critical public infrastructure, from schools to hospitals and public transportation.

Now, an economic downturn is leaving New York with a big budget deficit, and lawmakers are talking about cutting even more school aid and reducing healthcare spending.  To make it up, communities across New York may have to raise regressive sales and property taxes even higher.

Let's Do it Right.

We can repeal the tax breaks for richest New Yorkers. We can use the money to provide property tax relief and make the critical investments we need in healthcare, mass transit and public schools. New York needs a budget that invests in our future, and a tax system that shifts the burden from the middle class back to those who can most afford to pay.

We can get there, but it all starts with you. Sign the petition at the top of the page.

"New York State is mortgaging its future to preserve billions in tax cuts that went mostly to the richest New Yorkers. We need a fair budget that provides real property tax relief for the middle class and funds healthcare, education, transit, and housing."
